The scepter in a cutscene

The scepter is a golden staff with a blue bulb bestowed to King Corobo by Howser upon becoming king. Corobo wields it throughout the duration of Little King's Story. It is used for most major gameplay mechanics in conjunction with the Magic Crown.

Gameplay

Corobo is equipped with the scepter by default. However, unlike citizens' default weapons, it cannot be replaced with a more powerful weapon at any point, meaning the scepter is effectively locked to Corobo for the entire adventure.

Corobo is able to use the scepter in a variety of ways. Corobo points the scepter forwards to command his troops, and lifts it into the air while omitting a little star to hire citizens. Holding the retreat button will cause the scepter to produce a glowing, blue bubble-like magic at its bulb, which is intended to delay a retreat command until it is released. While holding the bubble, a spiral effect will appear under citizens' feet to show they are ready to retreat.

When on the field, Corobo can also attack using the scepter, which shoots a short ranged burst of stars out of its bulb for 1 damage. This is Corobo's only method to directly damage enemies or obstacles. If using the Defense or Evade Formations, then hitting a citizen with the scepter will send them to the back of the Royal Guard. Oddly, if the player is holding a bubble and performs a scepter attack, the bubble will remain but the retreat command will fail.

Corobo also uses the scepter in the table tennis minigame as a paddle, which can be swung using the A button or a shake of the Wii Remote, which is the only instance of motion controls in the game. Pressing C to enter first-person mode allows the player to play the game from Corobo's perspective, and only shows the scepter.

Appearances

Corobo is first seen with the scepter in the first cutscene after sitting upon the throne for the first time. It is implied that it was given to him by Howser, as the opening cinematic does not feature it in any capacity, not even with his small puppet version.

The Korobokle UMA wields a similar scepter, since it is a doppelgänger of Corobo. It can shoot projectiles that contain mind control properties, causing anyone hit to run around in a daze, in homage to Corobo's own mind control abilities.

On the first visit to the Worrywart Kingdom, Corobo is required to use the scepter to break through the Worrying Labyrinth. Before the cutscene upon defeating King Omelet, Corobo breaks the egg by smacking it with his scepter, then jumping at it and ramming the sceptre into the shell. Upon return visits, Corobo can tap the egg with the scepter to receive dialogue from Omelet.

After completing Ferne's Jewel Book quest, Corobo is able to swap the bulb at the top of the scepter with a Kingstone by talking to her. All jewels omit stars out of the top at all times, unlike the default scepter. Unlike the default bulb, Kingstones sparkle in a similar fashion to Corobo's Crown, which is the only visual difference between the default blue bulb and the blue Saffire stone.

The scepter is removed in New Little King's Story in favor of a sword.

Trivia

  • The sceptre attack is the cause of several glitches.
  • Oddly, sometimes during the sequence where Corobo is attacking the egg before Omelet's defeat cutscene, the sceptre's jewel changes to a golden colour. This is reverted back to normal after the Omelet Defeated cutscene.
