Meloncholie (スイカっぺ, Suika~tsupe) is an UMA, found in large quantities in the Melon Patch, where they are guarded by a Korobokle. Meloncholies will hide in the ground and disguise themselves as regular melon obstacles until provoked or alerted by something in the environment, such as a bridge being built.

Etymology

Meloncholie is a portmanteau of the words "melon" and "melancholy", meaning feeling sorrowful or depressed. The alternative spelling of "-choly" as "-cholie" seems to be purely stylistic, although it more closely resembles the French counterpart of the word, mélancholie.

Melonling
French Meloncholie Meloncholy
Italian Melone Melon
German Melone Melon
Spanish Melacolía Meloncholy

While the name is the same in French, the pun still works, as the French words for "melon" and "melancholy" are melon and mélancholie respectively.

The Spanish version is based on the word melancolía, although why the "n" is omitted is unclear.
